Book
Paperback. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. Trade Paperback in Good Condition. Foreword by Vaclav Havel Edited with an Introduction by Michael Aris. Bright and clean wraps with portrait of the author on front--she was the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize for 1991. The cover is lightly worn around all edges and flares up slightly, no spine creases. 16 pages of illustrations. Pages are quite clean, no markings of any kind. Note this was published in 1991 while Aung San Suu Kyi was still under house arrest in Rangoon, Burma. She was a human rights activist and leader of Burma's National League for Democracy when she was detained in 1989 by the ruling military junta following an uprising that swept Burma following more than 25 years of political repression. This collection of her writings, edited by her husband, Michael Aris, reflects her beliefs, hopes, and fears for her people. She provides a portrait of her father who was a leader of the nationalist movement in the 1930s and 1940s, writes on the literature and cultural heritage of Burma, and provides a comparative study of intellectual development in Burma and India under colonialism. Included is a selection of essays, speeches, letters and interviews resulting from her struggle for democracy. 338 pages, indexed. 5 x 8 inches. The Penguin Group.

Book First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. First Edition (Soft Cover, Hard Cover issued simultaneously) Full Number Line 1991, edited and with introduction by Michael Aris, subject's husband, in which he expresses the hope that the recent awarding of the Nobel Prize will influence the Myanmar government to release her. On the last page there is a pencilled notation, "10 July 1995 - Freed unconditionally, victorious. like Ghandi and Mandella." Sad to say, she was rearrested shortly thereafter, and except for a few short periods has been under house arrest much of the time, and for the past 13 years continuously. On 27 May 2008 her house arrest was extended for another year. When her husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1997, the Burmese government denied him an entry visa. He died in 1999 and they never saw each other again. She remains separated from her children, who live in the United Kingdom.[16] NEWS: the organisation AVAAZ is working together with Kyi's Burmese followers to collect 888,888 SIGNATURES to present to the Junta demanding her release. Google them to SIGN THE PETITION! 18mar2009. She is now 63 years old and there is concern about her health and living conditions. The pages of this copy are slightly yellowed from age. There is a very small price removal tag with residue on the front page, a bump impression on spine, edge wear at spine bottom and the aforementioned pencilled annotation.
