Book First Edition
Hard Cloth Cover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First Edition. Dust jacket complete, unclipped. Blue cloth with bright silver titling on spine. No ownership marks. xviii + 250 pages incl sources & index of writers. Clean and tight. This anthology of letters to the young is by writers as contrasting as Martin Luther and Groucho Marx, or Emma, Lady Hamilton and Virginia Woolf. General Eisenhower takes time off from war to pen kindly words to Ruthie, aged three, D H Lawrence appears as `Uncle Bert', Kenneth Tynan goes exhuberantly into doggerel, signed `Daddy'. The letters are not all from famous hands. Some were written by unsung heroes on the western front in World War One, others were sent by anxious parents in blitzed London to evacuated children in the 1940s. A few are picture letters, some exhibit an indifference to the suffering they might cause, some talk down their young recipients and there are those which might well have gone over their heads. Most are from adults, though exceptions include fifteenyear-old Elizabeth Barrett's vivid accusations aimed at her brother aged six, and the elegant circumlocutions of the Princess Elizabeth's prose paying homage to her brother of nine, King Edward VI. Homilies are not infrequent, yet a lot of the advice (from Lewis Carroll, James Thurber, C S Lewis, for instance) employs a humorous approach. The compiler was struck by the immensely diverse ways in which people attempt to communicate with the young. Her motives in making the collection were `to entertain, intrigue, and perhaps move, readers to find out more about the writers'. She laughed and cried over much of what she found; and so will the reader. Size: 8vo.
