Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. SOMEDAY, MAYBE, NEW POEMS by William Stafford, hardcover with unclipped dust jacket, stated first edition, 1973. BOOK CONDITION: near fine. The text block is in near fine condition, with no tears, dogears, or marks. No bookplate or name of a prior owner. Not a library book or remainder. The blue boards are in near fine condition (lightly bumped spine). The dust jacket is in good condition (chipping and small tears along top and bottom edges, rubbed covers, bookstore tags affixed to inner flap). 8 ¼ x 5 1/2, 86 pages, 9 ounces XX [From the dust jacket inner flaps] The quiet intensity and eloquence of William Stafford's poetry have won him wide esteem. This new collection of 76 poems is a notable addition to the body of his work. As always, the reader sees with the poet's eye, is part of the moment of insight that transforms the familiar into the unique; and, as always, he is astonished by the power beneath the tranquility. Some of these poems explore familiar Stafford regions and many venture elsewhere. An extraordinary group is centered around American Indians and their tribal lore. Stafford's reputation has grown with each new volume since the National Book Award-winning Traveling Through the Dark. Of his previous collection, Gerald Burns wrote in Southwest Review: "Allegiances is a book for the mountain cabin, to shelve beside Robinson Crusoe, Pilgrim's Progress and the Bible. In terms of content, it is the most dangerous book since Walden. In terms of art it is of inestimable value." XX WILLIAM STAFFORD was born in Hutchinson, Kansas, in 1914, and studied at the University of Kansas and the University of Iowa, where he received his doctorate. In his time he has been a laborer in sugar-beet fields, an oil refinery, and the U.S. Forest Service. He has worked for the Church of the Brethren and for Church World Service, and taught in Kansas, Iowa, California, Indiana, and Oregon. At present he is Professor of English at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon. Mr. Stafford's poetry has received numerous awards, among them the National Book Award, a Guggenheim award, and the Shelley Memorial Award. He served as Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress in 1970-1971.
