This was a war between British and German East Africa and it would not end until the European war ended also. The British (mostly incompetent with a 250,00 man army) could not break the hit and run tactics of the much smaller German army and their brilliant commander. Bloody and thrilling by turns, the British could not force the issue for four years. Ironically, it ended with a "capitulation of an army that had not lost to an army that had not won." Highly entertaining and a nice copy.

Hardcover. Condition: VG+. Dust Jacket Condition: VG+. Photos, Maps (illustrator). 1st. At the opening of World War one Germany, like Britain, had a far flung empire. Both had colonial territories in Africa and the European conflict quickly embraced these. The campaigns in Africa have been well overshadowed by the European slaughter, while and that in East Africa is termed by the author as "the last gentleman's war." The weaker German forces adapted better to fighting in vast spaces, in jungle and brushland, where supplies were few and far between. The outnumbered German forces, mainly colonial troops, held out till hostilities ended and their commander returned to his homeland as a hero. The author has constructed an excellent portrayel of this little known WWI theatre, fwith completely different conditions than in Europe. However, it absorbed a quarter million strong British army, manpower desperately needed on the Western Front. 353 pages including bibliography and index, 20 b/w photos, e/paper maps with others in text. Black hard covers with silver spine titles VG+, ditto text block, no inscriptions. Pictorial DJ also VG+.

Charles Miller (1918 - after 1977) was an American author of history books on East Africa such as The Lunatic Express, An Entertainment in Imperialism (1971) and Battle for the Bundu, The First World War in East Africa (1974). Miller lived in New York City and also wrote feature articles and book reviews for The Saturday Evening Post, Reader's Digest,The New Republic, and Saturday Review. Derived from a Kirkus review: Literally fighting through thorns in the East African interior, a quarter of a million Belgian and British forces failed to trap the small but elite Schutztruppe led by Paul Emil von Lettow-Vorbeck. Thus the Kaiser's Army succeeded in diverting the greatest possible number of Allied troops from Europe into four years of dust and disease and endless pursuit through the prickly bundu of enemies composed mainly of natives from the local "black master race." Far better supplied, in control of the seas and coastal waters, von Lettow's opponent General Smuts remained an unimaginative strategist, and when the Allies finally got their classic fixed battle, 2,700 men were lost -- and von Lettow escaped to maraud elsewhere. This account is militarily sophisticated and also nostalgic for the old days of formal warfare.

In a barely explored wilderness of dense jungle and thorn bush known as the bundu, the bizarre drama of the First World War in East Africa unfolded. This was the campaign that served as the background for Forester's African Queen; a colonial war in which a handful of native troops superbly commanded by Colonel von Lettow~Vorbeck held back a 250,000~man British army for more than four years. Desperately needed on the battlefields of Europe, the British troops were stalled in Africa almost solely by the strength of the German colonel's will. It might be said that von Lettow determined the timetable for World War I. The last war to be fought under a code of honor, the battle for the bundu was nonetheless a bloodbath. The British, whose forces far outnumbered the Germans', should by right of might have been the early victors; but as the head of British Intelligence reported: "Here I am in the rottenest side show imaginable, rotten troops and rotten leaders in a colony where from the Governor downward there is no feeling of patriotism." The English, nothwithstanding generations of colonial experience, were badly out~maneuvered by the German guerrilla hit~and~run tactics. And in matters of discipline, the weaker force far outmatched the stronger. When a British commander failed, he was sacked. When a German botched a mission, the legendary von Lettow handed him a pistol and said: "Let me hear some interesting news about you in a day or two." The Germans waged an almost faultless war, but the outcome of the struggle could only be dictated from the battlefields of Europe. When the end came there, World War I ended in East Africa also. In this brilliant re~creation of a time and place, the reader will feel the lumbering effort of the victor, the slippery ease of the vanquished, and will wonder, uneasily perhaps, which was which. For, as Mr. Miller so dramatically shows, it was very much a "capitulation of an army that had not lost to an army that had not won." Battle for the Bundu captures the full measure of the soldier at war~the heroism and cowardice, the exhilarations and frustrations that are his lot. Although the story is filled with war's grim realities and cruel ironies, it is also vastly entertaining, with the "reads~like ~a~novel" quality.
