We follow the main character, Abbe Pierre Froment, as he travels to three cities. Spiritual themes are explored and the three books have also been called "Faith, Hope and Charity". The first book is about a five day train trip to Lourdes and back. Zola explores the issue of suffering and the faith in miracles. In the second book the Abbe is warned that a book that he authored may be banned by the Vatican Council and the Pope. So to stop this happening he travels to Rome to plead his case. The third book is often regarded as the greatest of the trilogy. Abbe Pierre Froment has had his faith in him shaken, once in Lourdes and then again Rome. Now he returns to Paris and unbeliever. . Zola and Charles Dickens are considered to have wielded a significant influence on the fertilization of the so-called new journalism: Wolfe, Capote, Thompson, Mailer, Kesey Didion, Talese &tc. Tom Wolfe, of Hot Curl fame, wrote that his goal in writing fiction was to document contemporary society in the tradition of John Steinbeck, Charles Dickens, and Émile Zola.

First Edition
Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. First BiblioBazaar Edition. 324 Pages. The bottom of the front cover has a small and light crease. Beyond this is beautiful book with flawless interior text pages. A tight book that was probably never read. This book is the first of the Rougon-Macquart series. It was not the author's first essay in fiction but it was his first bid for literary fame and the foundation of what is regarded as his life-work. The idea of writing the social history of a family under the Second Empire in scores of volumes was probab;y suggested by Balzac's immortal Comedie Humaine. Zola was 28 when this idea first occurred to him and he was 53 when he sent the manuscript of his last volume, Dr. Pascal, to the press. He had spent 25 years working out his scheme. It was in the early summer of 1869 that M. Zola first began the actual writing of The Fortune of the Rougons. It was only in the following year, however, that the serial publication of the work commenced in the columns of Le Siecle, the Republican journal of most influence in Paris in those days. The Franco-German war interrupted this issue of the story, and publication in book form did not take place until 1871, a time when both the war had left Paris exhausted and with little or no interest in anything. It was an unfavorable time for this ambitious work of fiction and it was three years later before there was a revival of literature. The Rougon-Macquart series is in 20 volumes and the last Dr. Pascal was published in 1893.

First Edition
Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. First Mondial Edition. 332 Pages. No marks or stamps. Interior text pages are flawless. After a disastrous speculation, Aristide Saccard was forced to sell his mansion. Chance made him acquainted with Hamelin, an engineer whose residence in the East had suggested to him financial schemes which at once attracted the attention of Saccard. With a view to financing these schemes the Universal Bank was formed, and by force of advertising became immediately successful. Emboldened by success, Saccard launched into wild speculation. Judged by popularity, this title is at the top. This is not surprising, as the book deals with a subject of great interest to everyone. And with regard to this English version it is well timed. Emile Zola was born in Paris in 1840, the son of a Venetian engineer. He grew up in Aix-en-Provence and after an undistinguished school career and a brief period of dire poverty in Paris Zola joined the newly founded publishing firm of Hachette which he left in 1866 to live by his pen. He had already published a novel and his first collection of short stories. Other novels and stories followed until in 1871 Zola published the first volume of his Rougon-Macquart series, in which he illustrates the influence of heredity and environment on a wide range of characters. It was not until 1877 that his novel L 'Assommoir, a study of alcoholism in the working classes, brought him wealth and fame. The last of the Rougon-Macquart series appeared in 1893.

Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Dhar, Uday K. - Cover Painting (illustrator). First Mondial Edition. 307 Pages. No marks or stamps. Interior text pages are flawless. The Rougon family rises to fortune, and the town of Plassans (Aix-en-Provence) bows down before its power. But time passes and the clergy with their influence cause the town to choose a Royalist Marquis as deputy, and it becomes necessary to conquer it once again. Abb Faujas, by whom this conquest is achieved on behalf of the Empire, is a strongly conceived character, perhaps the most real of all the priests that are scattered through Zola's books. No other priestly creation of the author exceeds the stern, chaste, authoritative, ambitious Faujas, the man who subdues Plassans, and who wrecks the home of the Mouret family, with whom he lives. The book largely deals with the matter of the priest in the house, and towards the end Mouret, the husband who has been driven mad and shut up in a lunatic asylum, returns home and wreaks the most terrible vengeance upon those who have wronged him. The pages which deal with the madmans escape and his horrible revenge are certainly among the most powerful that Zola has ever written, and have been commended for their effectiveness by several of his leading critics.
