John A. Kasson came to Iowa from Charlotte, Virgina, already an accomplished lawyer, and in 1860, he was a delegate to the convention that selected Lincoln as the Republican Party's candidate for President. Under Lincoln, Kasson served as First Assistant Postmaster General and played a prominent role in US diplomacy. He died in 1910. ; Iowa Biographical Series Series.
