Trade paperback. Scott, Ernest (Design by). (illustrator). Gray card stock paper. Glued binding. 80 p. 22 cm. Index. B&W photos. Pen&Ink on cover. The story of a public library is the story of community and the supports through generation of its members. Thus, this is that story for Newport, New Hampshire, in Sullivan County. One extraordinary aspect of Richards Free Library is the annually given Sarah Josepha Hale Award given to a New England based author each year on the merit of her or his body of work. The first recipient was poet Robert Frost. The most recent in 2019 was novelist Jodi Picoult. Sarah Josepha Hale was a Newport native and proponent of education for girls and women, and many other themes found in Godey's Lady's Book, a magazine which she edited well into her 80s. Widowed and with children to support, she had left Newport to seek her career in writing and editing in Boston, then Philadelphia. Newport honors her support of writers in many ways, notably at its library. New. No dust jacket as issued. Signed by both Yeomans and Thorpe. Purchase of this edition helps support Richards Free Library.
