The Essential Landscape The New Mexico Photographic Survey with essays by J.B. lackson Combining the viewpoints of twelve photographers, this survey belongs to the great tradition of government-sponsored photo documentation that established the Rocky Mountains in the 1870s and the Great Depression of the 1930s in the American imagination. The New Mexico Photographic Survey, sponsored by the Museum of New Mexico and the National Endowment for the Arts in 1981-83, documents the state of New Mexico through a variety of individual eyes and is complemented here with a text by J. B. Jackson, the cultural geographer who has been so influential in teaching Americans to appreciate the twentieth-century landscape. This survey, unusually free of imposed structure or of didactic purpose, allowed the photographers great latitude in choice of topics and thus provides a cross section of documentary approaches to photography in the 1980s, which range from the raw and gritty pictures of Bernard Plossu and Miguel Gandert to the studied, manipulated compositions of Thomas Barrow and Meridel Rubenstein to the elegant palladium prints of Joan Myers. Working with a number of different formats, the photographers prepared exhibition prints according to their own styles. The book you see in the images is the actual book we have for sale.
