Sein Wirken war ganz der imitatio christi gewidmet: und einem Leben in strengster Armut und Demut. In seiner Radikalität fand er viele Anhänger, die sich aus allen sozialen Schichten zusammenfanden. Franziskus erwartete von jedem ein Leben nach dem Evangelium in aller Radikalität. Dem zunächst auf brüderlichem Miteinander basierendem Zusammenleben, folgte die erste Regel, sie war auf das Jahr 1221 datiert. Die Regel wurde vom apostolischen Stuhl, durch Papst Innozenz III. nur mündlich anerkannt- vermutlich konnte Franziskus die Zweifel des Papstes nicht zerstreuen, denn Innozenz hatte Zweifel der allerhöchsten Armut wegen. Er wollte später hinzukommenden Mitgliedern der Gemeinschaft ein allzu hartes Leben ersparen. Es liegt die Vermutung nahe, dass der Papst die innere Reform der Kirche vor Augen hatte und nur aus diesem Grunde Franziskus überhaupt erst empfing. Denn er musste erkannt haben, dass häretische Strömungen, die sich in der Gesellschaft häuften, nicht länger mit Gewalt zu unterdrücken waren. Offenbar erschienen ihm die Brüder auch eher den Häretikern zugeneigt, er bezeichnete ein Leben nach dem purem Evangelium als Wahnsinn .Schriftlich bestätigt wurde die Ordensregel 1223 nach deutlicher Überarbeitung, seitens der Kirche, insbesondere durch Kardinal Hugolino von Ostia- dem späteren Papst, Gregor IX.Der französische Mediävist Jacques Le Goff, stellte in seiner 2006 erschienenen Biografie über Franz von Assisi die eklatanten Unterschiede zwischen der bullierten und der unbullierten Regel heraus. Wesentliche Punkte sind radikal zusammengefasst worden Der Armutsgedanke den Franziskus, entsprechend dem Evangelium in seiner ganzen Radikalität - mitunter auch über die heilige Schrift hinaus - praktizierte, wurde in seiner Schärfe deutlich abgeschwächt und in kurzen Sätzen zusammengefasst. Bibelzitate, aus denen Franziskus seine Armutsinterpretation bezog, fielen ersatzlos weg.Die vorliegende Arbeit will zeigen, dass der Ursprungsgedanke des Franziskus, ein Leben in allerhöchster Armut, Demut und Spiritualität zu führen, in der päpstlich approbierten Ordensregel keinen Niederschlag findet. Ein allgemeiner Überblick über das frühe Armutsverständnis der Franziskaner eröffnet das Thema. Im Anschluss werden beide Ordensregeln, insbesondere zum Armutsideal Franziskus untersucht.
