Quarto hardcover; 144pp., colour and monochrome illustrations. Dustwrapper lightly faded along spine and lower edges (now professionally protected by superior non-adhesive polypropylene film); otherwise minor wear only. Very good to near fine. Postage quoted is for a standard format octavo book. Final charges may vary depending on size and weight. The English born painter Walter Withers is known for his moody landscapes of Victorian scenes around Heidelberg, Eaglemont and Creswick. In the brotherhood of the Heidelberg school of painters he was called 'The Colonel' for his ability to organise others, and his old farmstead at Charterisville became the home for a generation of painters in the 1890s. His indefatigable wife Fanny wrote four manuscripts on the life and art of her husband, one of which became the small publication produced by Alexander McCubbin, The Life and Art of Walter Withers - as part of his Australian Art Book Series of the 1920s. Fanny Withers played an important role not only in acting as housewife and mother to Walter's six children, but also in supporting and encouraging her husband and helping run the business side of his life. Her strong will and character, ceaseless energy and her eagerness to promote her husband's career had her entertaining guests and defending assiduously his art works against the critics. Her pen was ever ready, poised to strike at those who unwittingly or unjustifiably attacked his works. In one instance a series of letters were exchanged with a Mr. Carrington of the Argus who deigned to criticise adversely Wither's work prior to the exhibition. In her protest, Fanny Withers wrote: ' .I do understand the function of an Art Critic - when my husband and I lived in Paris, I was Musical Critic for one of the London Papers, but I never wrote about a performance without hearing it'. To which Carrington replied: 'You may, or should know that a wife's evidence for or against her husband is absolutely and entirely valueless for sound and very obvious reasons'. That Carrington had to resort to such a statement is probably tantamount to an admission that his match had been met. Fanny did not confine herself to only these pursuits. She was a teacher in Heidelberg and Eltham and was passionately concerned with the social welfare of the poorer members of the community. She wrote a novel, Boarded Out; a Story Founded on Fact which was published in Melbourne by Fraser & Jenkinson in 1907, sending out copies of the book to influential members in the community including various local and state members of the government as a means of helping these unfortunate children. The four manuscripts, letters, photographic images of the family, studios and the works of Walter Withers are all included here.

First thus edition hard back binding in publisher's original slip case. Olive cloth covers, silver title to the spine. 4to 12'' x 8½''. Contains 3 volumes in 1 [x] 119; [xii] 126; [x] 151 printed pages of text with 5 folding diagrams in a separate folder 'The U-Boat War in the Atlantic diagrams 1-32'. After WW2, Fregattenkapitan Gunter Hessler (a son in law of Donitz) was given free access to the war diaries and other primary sources of the German Navy to write a history and analysis of the U-Boat offensive in the Atlantic. It covered many aspects such as general strategy, signals intelligence, tactics and weapons, adopting a largely German viewpoint. It also investigated Allied countermeasures and the response of the U-Boat Command. Written at the request of the Admiralty, the 3-volume work was classified material never available to the general public. This facsimile edition of the volumes, with a fresh introduction by Lt. Cdr. Andrew Withers,is a valuable addition to the published history of the war,and contains information available nowhere else. Corrections and explanations have been added to the original text-incidents puzzling Hessler can be better understood, for example, now that we have the full story of British Intelligence Work in deciphering German Signals. For students of military, naval or intelligence history The U-Boat War in the Atlantic is a unique account, not least because the many charts and diagrams allow the record of each U-Boat to be traced, including its deployment on any particular day. Book
Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Environmental Consequences and Management of Coastal Industries: Terms and Concepts covers the engineering, natural and social sciences aspects related to coastal power plants and their operation and management. The book gives background to featured problems and solutions, making it relevant to power plants in all global situations and giving practitioners what they need to assess environmental consequences. In addition, the book indicates, defines and illustrates the terms and concepts used worldwide. This is important as engineers and scientists often have an imperfect understanding of the requirements of each other, and similar (in some cases identical) terms may have very different meanings.Users will find this to be a simple and accessible guide to the terminology used and concepts covered. Individual entries are complete in themselves, but still cross referenced to other entries where additional information may be found. This provides quick-and-easy access to the required information. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
