Hardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. Complete in 15 volumes. A. J. Valpy, 1832-1834; first of this edition thus, with no later printings indicated in any volume. Bound by Howell's of Liverpool in 3/4 maroon morrocco with marbled paper over boards, gilt top edges, lighter pink marbled end pages, gilt titling and borders on spines. Bindings are stamped "Howell Liverpool" on verso of front end page. Several illustrated plates throughout each volume, 170 in all, engraved from the art collected in John Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery, a key experience in the late-18th century Shakespeare revival in London. Bookplate of Kemper Hall fixed to each front paste-down. Originally the residence of Wisconsin Senator Charles Durkee, the Kenosha, WI mansion became an Episcopal girls' school in 1871 and is now on the National Register of Historic Places. All bindings are tight and sturdy; marbled paper very lightly rubbed on boards of nearly every volume; five volumes have small abrasions to leather near head of spine, all show some amount of lighter rubbing or wear to extremities, gilt remains bright and bold on the whole; light to moderate amount of surface scratches in gilt top edges; illustrations and text very good throughout.
