Pages and binding are presentable with no major defects. Minor issues present such as mild cracking, inscriptions, inserts, light foxing, tanning and thumb marking. Overall a good condition item. Boards have mild shelf wear with light rubbing and corner bumping. Some light marking and sunning. Unclipped jacket has moderate edgewear with chips, tears, and creasing. Small area of loss to top edge. Light tanning to spine and edges. Wear marks overall.

Only part of DJ present: both flaps, and part of rear DJ, edges of DJ portions darkened and small tears/chips. Russell found himself totally unable to accept the institution of slavery, and he turned his allegiance to the North. However, his honest reporting of the federal retreat after the first battle of Bull Run won him no friends, and he was forced to retire to England.
