Hardcover. Condition: Very Good ++. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. B/W Photographs (illustrator). First Edition. Book's title refers to the time to travel from Fort Calgary north to Dickson's Stopping House in oxcart days. The 429 pages of this book ostensibly refer to the village/town of Airdrie, but they can never quite escape the shadow of Calgary - the large, nearby city. Other settlements in the region include : Beddington, Old Bow Fort, Keoma, Helmsdale, Balzac, Crossfield, and Simon's Valley. Author sweeps broadly, beginning with the geology of the area - the geology that leads to an oil and gas industry for the area. He touches weather and climate, and FIRST PEOPLES, before getting into the ranching that brought numbers of Europeans to the area. Read more about the Collicutt, Potter & Petapiece, and Mount Royal Ranch companies. From there the book becomes a more typical local history - taking in weddings, men of the cloth, early teachers (like Miss Ouderkirk), newspapers, local government, local merchants, and land transactions. A glossary of regional place names covers pp. 101 to 121. Several MAPS complement the text, as do several dozen b/w photographs. Learn more about : A. E. Bowers, Olaf Kolstad, the Bert Clayton Dip, Whiskey Coulee, Marion Pole, Master Farmers, coyote hunts, Airdrie Mutual Telephone Company, councillor W.H. Blankley, beef rings, and the Beddington Boulder. Long list of School Districts on pp. 290 to 292. Appendices - one includes names of those filing on homesteads. The book closes with a piece on ATCO - a local, portable-housing manufacturer. Cond : Boards are navy blue. End-papers are very light green. (UNclipped) Dust jacket is light green. D.J. graphic shows a covered wagon and the Calgary skyline. Volume is clean and crisp but d.j. has edge wear. Colours bright, tight in binding, spine excellent. No creases, marks, nor tears in text. Almost giftable copy. Quote (p. 171 ) : " The same council carried on the business of the village in 1913 until January 25 when A.E. Bowers was elected chairman for ._._. . During that year there was some concern in getting the Royal North West Mounted Police to be stationed at Airdrie, the town pump was replaced and there was concern over stray pigs. Also in June of that year ._._._. ." Size: Octavo.
