Book
Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. B/W Photographs (illustrator). First Edition. `There once was a time when the railroads did not run . says Lightfoot. These 202 pages are a very well researched look at the rails that tied B.C. to Alberta, Alberta to itself, and the whole to the rest of Canada. The foundations for much of what the BIG guys (see CNR-CPR Act -1933) later ran, were laid by the likes of the Kettle Valley, the GTP, the E&N, the NWC & NC, the AR & CC, the C&E, the EY&P, the PGE, etc. Also shown are some of the big engineering feats like the Rogers Pass snowsheds, the Connaught Tunnel, the Lethbridge Viaduct and the Coquihalla Pass to name a few. EXCELLENT b/w photo records - incl. dignitaries and common labourers. I didn't know what a Ligerwood was ? Neither a Silk Train, the Peanut Special, nor a Mallet. Stops in such places as Wolf Creek, Prince Rupert, Duhamel, Shuswap, Laggan, D'Arcy, Quesnel, and Dunvegan. Looks at the tourist hotels like Glacier House, as well as the businessmen who surveyed, designed, built, financed, and maintained the RAILROADS. Notes, appendix, and date-stamped MAPS from p. 172 onward. Cond : Paper wrapper is rust w/ cream decoration. Front cover lettering matches that. Front cover graphic is of the Duke of York and his group riding the cow-catcher. All corners and edges crisp - Bright and clean . No names, marks, tears, nor stains. Nostalgia at its BEST !! Quote (p. 86) : " Steel on the GTP's main line was connected on April 7, 1914, at Finmoore, B.C. and the last spike was driven at noon by Chief Engineer Kelliher. Although the first west-bound train reached Prince Rupert two days later, the line was not considered ._._._. ." Size: 4to.
