Hardcover. Condition: As New. No Jacket. ### The Folio Society Book - With Napoleon In Russia 1812 by Lt H A Vossler a soldier of the Grand Army 1812-1813 1969 Edition ### ### THE FOLIO SOCIETY: This is the 1969 edition. First Edition 1969. The book is AS NEW; the spine is still tight. No Slipcase. Cover boards are bound in Scholco Halflinnen cloth and blocked with a special design by Jeff Clements. Set in ?Monotype? Baskerville 11point leaded space 2 points, on smooth paper, the endpaper maps drawn by K C Jordan. Stunning finish. See Images. There are twenty-one chapters within Part one and Part Two. This book is from a private collector and would seem to be either unread or just glanced through ## # Instead of the 400,000 companions who had fought so many Russian battles with them, who had swept so masterfully into Russia, they saw emerging from the white, ice-bound wilderness only 1000 infantrymen and troopers under arms, 9 cannon and 20,000 stragglers dressed in rags, with bowed heads, dull eyes, ashen, cadaverous faces an long, ice- stiffened beards . this was the Grand Army. The words are those of Count Philippe-Paul de Segur, Napoleon?s aide-de-camp during the Russian campaign, describing the return of the Grand Army stricken remnants across the Neiman in December 1812. And the concluding words of his history of the campaign sum up the fascination it holds for us to this day: ?The noise of such a fool will echo down the ages, in which great misfortunes bring immortality as surely as great glories.? The very dimensions of the catastrophe make it a subject for never-ending speculation and the stuff of which the world?s great literature and poetry are made. ## ## Folio Society Information - The Folio Society is a unique and proudly independent publisher. They make some of the most beautiful books in the world. Folio publishes a broad range of exceptional books, choosing existing titles from the world's great works of fiction and non-fiction. An account of the historic events of Napoleon's 1812 campaign to invade Russia, as seen through the eyes of Lt H.A. Vossler. The text is supported by editorial comments from the translator, Walter Wallich. The Württemberg cavalry officer Heinrich August Vossler was one of the few of Napoleon?s Grande Armée returning from Russia in the winter of 1812. The description of the invasion of Russia and retreat forms the first part. In the second part Vossler narrates how he became a prisoner-of war being taken to Russia only to be released and re-patriated when Württemberg changed sides, abandoning France and joining the Russian coalition with Prussia and Austria. Vossler's account is worth reading for his descriptions of the march and the unimaginable conditions during the retreat in ice and snow with little food and lack of warm clothing during which the great majority of the soldiers perished. The book is well edited with a map and name-index. Ref YYY 3.
