Two maps at front fold out, one is in full colour. Brown cloth with black impressing. Corners and spine ends worn, scuff at top front, some soiling to cloth. Tape-repaired endpapers. Ink signature on title page. Arthur Pendarves Vivian was a frequent traveller and a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. He first published Wanderings in the Western Land in 1879, describing his travels in North America, starting in 1877 from St Johns, Newfoundland. Here he recounts his encounters with ferocious bears, study of geology, encounters with Indians, the Yosemité Valley, Comstock mining, etc. Some illustrations from sketches by the painter Albert Bierstadt, known for his sweeping landscapes of the American West.
