Con él puso las bases para elaborar después su cristología («De carne Christi») y su soteriología («De resurrectione mortuorum»). La antropología de Tertuliano está atravesada y dominada por su escatología; pero, por reacción contra el idealismo místico de la gnosis herética, esta escatología aparece tenazmente anclada en el cuerpo y obligada, por tanto, a contar con su mortalidad. Esto, más el momento trágico por el que pasaban entonces los cristianos, hace que el tema de la muerte esté muy presente en toda la obra del autor. Su gusto por el realismo le lleva a observar minuciosamente todo tipo de detalles y circunstancias, con lo cual el tema gana en viveza y color. SALVADOR VICASTILLO, doctor en Filosofía por la Universidad Complutense, pasó después a la Universidad Gregoriana de Roma para especializarse en Patrología, bajo la dirección del P. Orbe. Tertuliano es un autor que abre caminos: lo mismo que fue el primero en elaborar una teología del bautismo y del sacramento de la penitencia, lo fue también en redactar un tratado de psicología desde la fe cristiana. Su tratado De anima tiene una estructura ordenada, a la manera de los tratados de la época: comienza con una presentación del alma, sujeto del estudio, y concluye indagando en su destino final más allá de la muerte. En la estructura se intercalan a veces ciertas digresiones sobre temas (la metempsicosis, los sueños) que tenían un particular interés para la gente de aquel tiempo. La obra es a la vez didáctica y polémica, pues tiene siempre presentes a los herejes gnósticos, que eran muchos y combativos. Tras los herejes descubre siempre a los filósofos, que los aprovisionan de ideas y argumentos. Como él mismo confiesa, quiso acercarse a los filósofos paganos, que tanto habían discutido sobre el alma, llevándoles las preguntas de un creyente cristiano de aquel tiempo (siglo II-III). No menos de veinte filósofos desde el presocrático Tales de Mileto hasta el medio-platónico Albino van pasando por sus páginas; todo lo cual demuestra que Tertuliano vivía su fe en constante diálogo con la razón. Para defender sus tesis suele ofrecer como argumento final el testimonio de la Biblia; en su búsqueda de la verdad no podía no tener en cuenta el libro que, desde su conversión, era para él la revelación de la verdad. No podemos pretender que nuestro autor se comporte como un intelectual cristiano de hoy que, mientras investiga, pone entre paréntesis su fe; eso habría sido en él un anacronismo.
