Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Unsung Heroines the Women who Won the War; Vera Lynn with Robin Cross and Jenny de Gex; Sidgwick & Jackson, London, 1990. First edition. Signed by Vera Lynn. Dame Vera Margaret Lynn (née Welch; 1917 2020) was an English singer, songwriter and entertainer whose musical recordings and performances were very popular during the Second World War. She was widely referred to as the "Forces' Sweetheart" and gave outdoor concerts for the troops in Egypt, India and Burma during the war as part of Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA). The songs most associated with her are "We'll Meet Again", "(There'll Be Bluebirds Over) The White Cliffs of Dover", "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square" and "There'll Always Be an England". She remained popular after the war, appearing on radio and television in the United Kingdom and the United States, and recording such hits as "Auf Wiederseh'n, Sweetheart" and her UK number-one single "My Son, My Son". Her last single, "I Love This Land", was released to mark the end of the Falklands War. In 2009, at the age of 92, she became the oldest living artist to top the UK Albums Chart with the compilation album We'll Meet Again: The Very Best of Vera Lynn. Vera Lynn died on 18 June 2020 at her home in East Sussex aged 103 and was given a military funeral. From the blurb This marvellously illustrated book presents an anthology of women's experience throughout the war, seen through their eyes and told in their own words. We follow nurses to the front line in the Western Desert and Normandy; learn how women Air Raid Wardens coped with the horrors of the Blitz and the V-weapons; and share the courage of Resistance workers and SOE agents in Occupied France. Some of these stories are harrowing, others are full of humour and quirky detail. They provide living testimony to the bravery, resourcefulness, and sheer strength in adversity of women at war. This large format book, 176 pages measuring 282mm X 200mm, is in near-fine condition. There is a bump indentation on the top of the boards near the spine. The dust jacket is also in near-fine condition, now in a protective mylar wrap. A moving work by one of England's most loved singers. Signed by Author(s).
