Magazine / Periodical First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 401-430 pages with map, figures, table and cited references. Quarto (11" x 8 1/4") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Current Anthropology Volume 35, Volume 4 complete issue. First edition. Archaeological investigations on the margins of "high civilizations" have traditionally been guided by the assumption that polities in such zones were peripheral to core states. This paper argues that this assumption obscures the multiple dimensions along which core/periphery distinctions can be measured and ignores the possibility of mutual influence and interdependence among interacting societies at all size and complexity levels. This confusion is particularly evident in the study of southeastern Mesoamerica (adjoining portions of Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador), usually viewed as peripheral to lowland Maya core states during the Late Classic period (A.D. 600-950). In an attempt to advance the study of polities bordering complex and extensive sociopolitical systems, a general model is outlined which sets out to identify the different dimensions of peripherality and specify the conditions under which various sorts of core/periphery relations are likely to develop. Late Classic political, economic, demographic, and cultural patterns from the Naco Valley, northwestern Honduras, are then examined to determine how this area was linked to lowland Maya core states (represented here by Copan and Quirigua) and what effects these ties had on indigenous developments. The essay concludes with an overview of Late Classic lowland Maya/non-Maya interactions in the Southeast and some general suggestions for future research. Condition: Light edge wear, corners gently bumped and rubbed else very good.

Seller: Structure, Verses, Agency Books, Spray, OR, U.S.A.
Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Particularly lovely exemplar of the First Edition of the January 1745 issue of The Gentleman's Magazine. Edited and published by Edward Cave, whose nom-de-plume was Sylvanus Urban, it functioned as a repository of art, culture, literature and especially politics for the learned Englishman and woman. Handsomely rebound in full-calf leather, sharp and distinct gilt lettering to spine, new endpapers, blind-stamped ruled edges front and rear, but no notes as to binder. Measures 8 3/4" x 5 1/8" tall and wide, respectively. Double-column text, handsomely engraved heads, tails and initial letters. Proceedings and Debates in the Senate of Lilliput including regarding the "house of hurgoes" and recent legislation written to criminalize holding "correspondence with the sons of the pretender," then a "Speech on the Report of the Hanoverian Troops 1744," a "Plan for Establishing a National Militia," and assorted other matters of national politics, Empire, and literature including a lengthy section of books newly out. Staining to text-block edges such that remaining oblong, football-shaped interior is bright and unmarked, whereas edges are lightly stained, thus slightly more difficult to read; tide-lines not sharp, generally unobtrusive. All in, a fine, accessible monthly contribution to a leading English periodical. [3], 4-56 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.
