Hardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. Six individual issues bound in one volume without monthly covers and ads. Octavo, 9 1/2" tall, vi + 574 pages with many intertextual black and white illustrations + 6 hand-colored plates, 11 black and white steel plates, three-quarter leather. A good copy overall, cover leather worn through to boards at fore-corner tips, leather back strip rubbed at hinge fold, hinges secure but cracked, front illustration plates, contents page and first page are loose together, internal binding is solid, endpapers lightly foxed, internal pages generally clean and lightly yellowed, but with scattered foxing mostly at the margins and gutters, most tissue guards present.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Two volumes. First edition of this two-volume set. Maroon boards with gilt spine titles. Both volumes with frontispieces with tissue guards. Both volumes with former owner signature on title pages and second owner's rubberstamped name address, and smiley face on front free endpapers. Both volumes bindings are square and tight. Only light wear to bindings. Very Good or better. Hone made a fortune as a New York auctioneer and went on to form the first Savings Bank and join the boards of many prominent New York businesses and institutions. The diary begins in 1828 and ends with his death in 1851.

Signed and Inscribed by editor Bayard Tuckerman on second page of Volume I. NOTE: Shelved in Front Desk Alcove. Philip Hone was Mayor of New York from 1826-1827. Two volumes. Contemporary three-quarter crushed red morocco and red cloth, spines gilt. Edges worn, corners rubbed, spines sunned. Hinges cracked at titlepages. Otherwise, very good. The famous diary of Philip Hone, which he kept from 1828 until his death in 1851. The diary is likely the most extensive and detailed personal record of the first half of the 19th century in America. Hone was a businessman, auctioneer, and a socialite of sophistication and fine taste, whose many friends included Washington Irving, Samuel Morse, Daniel Webster, John Jacob Astor, John Quincy Adams, and Martin Van Buren. Hone also served a single term as mayor of New York City from 1826-28. HOWES H608.
