Condition: Wie neu. Mack Books, London. 2013. First edition, first printing. New, mint, unread; still originally shrink-wrapped in publisher`s plastic foil. Ray-Jones is famous for: "A Day Off" (The Open Book, The Hasselblad Center, page 202/203. 802 photo books by the M.+M. Auer collection, page 583). Fantastic photobook! Hardcover with dustjacket. 200 x 200 mm. 80 pages. 45 colour plates. Text auf englisch. "American Colour 1962-1965 is a carefully edited selection of previously unpublished Tony Ray-Jones colour photographs from the earliest period of his work. Taken from the extensive archives held at the National Media Museum in Bradford by Liz Jobey, this book brings together the early experiments that would inform his later work. Ray-Jones arrived in America in 1961 on a scholarship to Yale to study graphic art and he returned to England four years later. It was in America that he learned to be a photographer. Among New York`s street parades, on Fifth Avenue, in Times Square, Chinatown and Little Italy he learned to extract individual moments from a crowded backdrop and to find order in the chaos of the street. Based in New York, he made trips across the country - west to Detroit, south to Florida - all the time making colour pictures alongside the black and white images for which he would later became known. Ray-Jones later referred to these early photographs as "isolated sketches", and they were clearly a part of his formative experience. At the time colour was considered vulgar and not the medium of serious photography, but for Ray-Jones it expressed the excitement of America in a way that black and white could not. "I found America a very colour-conscious country," he said. "Colour is very much part of their culture, and they use it in crazy ways. You look down Madison Avenue at lunchtime and the colours just vibrate." Tony Ray-Jones (1941-1972) was born in Somerset, educated at Christ`s Hospital school and the London School of Printing, from which he won a scholarship to Yale to study graphic art. He arrived in America in 1961, and between studying for a Masters, spent increasing amounts of time in New York, where he studied under and worked for Alexey Brodovitch and made friends with fellow photographers including Joel Meyerowitz and Garry Winogrand. He worked as a designer at CBS Records and as an art director for several magazines before committing to freelance photography full-time. He returned to England at the end of 1965 and made the series of photographs that would be published posthumously, after his early death from leukemia, as A Day Off: An English Journal (1974)." Hardcover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. RRB Photobooks / Martin Parr Foundation 16th October 2019 Hardcover, Red Cloth 30 x 25 cm, 128 pages Essay by Liz Jobey Introduction by Martin Parr A new exhibition and book will mark the important contribution that Tony Ray-Jones (1941 1972) and his legacy, have made to British documentary photography. The exhibition and book will focus on photographs taken between 1966 1969 as Ray-Jones, driven by curiosity, travelled across the country to document English social customs and what he saw as a disappearing way of life. This small but distinctive body of photographs was part of an evolutionary shift in British photography, placing artistic vision above commercial success. In this short period of time, Ray-Jones managed to establish an individual personal style. He constructed complex images against a uniquely English backdrop, where the spaces between the components of the image were as important as the main subject matter itself. Ray-Jones skills were gleaned from a generation of street photographers he encountered whilst living in New York in the mid-1960s. These photographers included Garry Winogrand, Joel Meyerowitz and others associated with the circle of legendary Harpers Bazaar art director Alexey Brodovitch. Their pictures defined the era as they used the street as a framework. Ray-Jones applied this new way of seeing to his native England and photographed his observations as they had never been seen before. In 2012, Martin Parr alongside curator Greg Hobson, revisited Ray-Jones' contact sheets from this period and found previously unseen images. These new discoveries will be exhibited and published alongside iconic early images, including vintage prints from the Martin Parr Foundation collection. Tony Ray -Jones was one of my initial inspirations as a photographer. His imagery showed me what was possible in shooting my own country. In 2012 I went through his contact sheets and found previously unseen images. These all contributed to a show the Media Space in 2013 where his iconic early images were shown alongside these new discoveries. There has not been a book of Tony Ray-Jones's work in print for many years, so this new publication, from Martin Parr Foundation and RRB Photobooks will correct this oversight and the accompanying show will give us a chance to enjoy this important photographer's immense contribution to British documentary photography.
