Bedford in each volume. Top edges gilt.The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle is a picaresque novel by Tobias Smollett (172-1771), first published in 1751 and revised and published again in 1758. It tells the story of an egotistical man who experiences luck and misfortunes in the height of 18th-century European society. The four books form volumes 4 to 7 of the publisher's collected works of Tobias Smollett, edited by George Saintsbury in twelve volumes.The books are uniformly bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling and designs on the spines and front boards. The cases of the books are in very good condition with some shelf wear on the boards. The top of the spine of the first volume and bottom of the spine of volumes 2 and 3 are bumped. The spines have faded to a light brown colour. The contents are tight and clean with some foxing on the endpapers and a few scattered light foxing marks elsewhere within the books, including some marks on the frontispiece illustrations. There is a small private ex-libris label on the front fixed endpapers.

Tobias George Smollett (ca.1721-1771), a Scottish author, was known for his "picaresque" novels (stories which depict the adventures "of a roguish, but 'appealing hero', of low social class, who lives by his wits in a corrupt society" (n.b., quote from Wiki). His best-known novels are included in this set, such as "Roderick Random", "Peregrine Pickle", and "Humphrey Clinker"; while perhaps less read today than in the past, his works influenced such major authors as Charles Dickens and mention of him pops up in Thackeray's "Vanity Fair" and Eliot's "Middlemarch". The editor of this set, George Edward Bateman Saintsbury (1845-1933) was a well-known literary critic and historian, with his work covering a wide range of topics: French literature, English literature, and Poetry, in addition to providing numerous articles for the ninth edition (1875-1889) of the Encyclopaedia Britannica.
