First Edition Signed
First Edition, First Printing. Signed and inscribed by Barnett Newman to his friend, the great art curator Henry Geldzahler. Inscribed: ÒTo Henry, with admiration and love, BarneyÓ. Henry Geldzahler (1935-1994) was the very influential late 20th Century art curator, critic and writer whose friends were a virtual WhoÕs Who of contemporary artists. The book has a Geldzahler estate bookplate indicating GeldzahlerÕs art book collection was donated to an institution which eventually decided to sell the Geldzahler books. Issued largely paperbound, this copy is one of the few copies issued hardbound. A little bit of aging to endpapers as is common with the hardbound copies else near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Illustrated throughout with black & white and color illustrations of NewmanÕs work. Enclosed in a handsome full cloth custom clamshell box. This is the first full monographic book on Newman and was published the year before NewmanÕs passing. Barnett Newman autograph material is of great rarity, and is especially desirable here in such a terrific association copy.
