Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. OUT OF NOW, First Edition, First Printing. Oversized pictorial hardcover. No dust jacket as issued. This was the personal copy of writer Jill Johnston who was the dance, arts and culture critic of the Village Voice in the late 50's, 60's and 70's. It bears her stamp "Write First, Then Live." J.J. on a blank front endpaper. She wrote an important piece on Hsieh which was included in her book Secret Lives in Art. Mr. Hsieh, a performance artist extraordinaire, tested the limits of human experience over a lifetime of creating and then following through with concept art that demanded singleness of purpose and extraordinary discipline to execute to completion. His projects have become synonymous with the experimentation of the 70's. Several of those projects are captured in stark black and white photographs included in this book. PLUS a second related book also included with purchase. SECRET LIVES IN ART, Jill Johnston, 1994, a cappella books, First paperback edition and first paperback printing. This book includes the chapter Hardship Art, an article about the work of Teching Hsieh. The book includes many other wonderful articles on various artists of interest to Johnston from the avant garde movement. A perfect companion work to own with Hsieh's OUT OF NOW.

First Edition Signed
Condition: Very good. First edition. Rare signed portfolio documenting Hsieh's third extended performance piece, a full year in New York City spent outside shelter of any kind (save for 15 hours inside a police station courtesy of the NYPD), issued in conjunction with an installation at Franklin Furnace. Each of Hsieh's one-year performances was preceded by a written statement of intent and documented with notes, on film, and in photographs, as his long endurance of his chosen conditions progressed: "In the same way that the images offer an apocalyptic view of the world, they show us the survivor hero who managed to endure the penalties of his circumstances" (Ingberman). Hsieh's first two performances required only personal and artistic discipline and the cooperation of one assistant - staying inside a constructed cell in his own studio and punching a time clock every hour, respectively. This third performance, his so-called 'Outdoor Piece,' was also an experiment in restriction and discipline, but one which took the artist outside the narrow ambit of a controlled gallery or studio space, relinquishing as much control as he asserted: in New York, outside, like Hell, is other people. An uncommon document of this pioneering performance artist, it is quite rare signed. 11'' x 14''. Folder containing six bifold leaves [24 pages] printed with artist's statement and large-scale black and white photographs. Signed by Hsieh below artist's statement. Light to moderate edgewear and scuffing to wrappers and leaves.
