Maroon Leather Hardback. Condition: USED_VERYGOOD. First World's Classics Edition. 1916. First edition in the Oxford World's Classics series (No. 207). xix, 552pp. and a double-page frontispiece map. Top edge gilt. Philip Meadows Taylor (1808-1876) was an English Indian administrator and novelist. When he was fifteen he was sent to India and obtained a commission in the service of the Nizam of Hyderabad. Except for a three year furlough between 1837 and 1840, he remained in India until 1860. He was a correspondent for The Times and also wrote novels about India. "Confessions of a Thug", in which he uses fiction to describe factual scenes which he had heard about the Thuggee cult, was first published in 1839 and is probably his most famous work. The story may seem incredible, the product of an overfertile and gruesome imagination, but Sir William Sleeman's Thug Gangs is proof that he was guilty of no exaggeration. The edition for sale has been edited with an introduction and glossary by C.W. Stewart. The book is bound in the original limp maroon full leather boards with gold titling and simple designs on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with some scuffing to the leather on the boards. The leather on the corner tips is worn with a little damage and loss to the leather. The spine is slightly faded with a little damage and loss at the bottom of the spine and loss of up to about 1/8" at the top of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription.
