Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Particularly lovely exemplar of the First Edition of the January 1745 issue of The Gentleman's Magazine. Edited and published by Edward Cave, whose nom-de-plume was Sylvanus Urban, it functioned as a repository of art, culture, literature and especially politics for the learned Englishman and woman. Measures 8 3/4" x 5 1/8" tall and wide, respectively. Double-column text, handsomely engraved heads, tails and initial letters. Proceedings and Debates in the Senate of Lilliput including regarding the "house of hurgoes" and recent legislation written to criminalize holding "correspondence with the sons of the pretender," then a "Speech on the Report of the Hanoverian Troops 1744," a "Plan for Establishing a National Militia," and assorted other matters of national politics, Empire, and literature including a lengthy section of books newly out. Staining to text-block edges such that remaining oblong, football-shaped interior is bright and unmarked, whereas edges are lightly stained, thus slightly more difficult to read; tide-lines not sharp, generally unobtrusive. All in, a fine, accessible monthly contribution to a leading English periodical. [3], 4-56 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Fort Frontenac was built by the French in 1673. Until the American Revolution, the fort languished since the British considered other places more important for defence and trade. However, at the end of the revolutionary war, interest increased. Not only was it's strategic importance growing, but also as a resettlement for Loyalists. Fort Frontenac fell to the British in August 1758. Lieutenant-Colonel John Bradstreet led a force of a little over 3000 from Fort Oswego to attack the fort, which contained a garrison of 110 men, who surrendered and were allowed to leave. The fort's supplies and nine French naval vessels were sized, and much of the fort destroyed. Bradstreet quickly departed before any French relief forces could arrive. This map also locates the settlements of Kent and Ganaraske, the Toniata Village of Iroquois, the Catarackui River, Deer Island, the Bay of Niaoure and more. With cartouche and decorative compass. Published in this November 1758 London Magazine: or, Gentleman's Monthly Intelligencer. It ran uninterrupted for almost 200 years using 5 different but similar full Titles. Cave created this monthly magazine of news and views, including commentary on such varied and interesting topics from commodity prices to Royalty. It not only carried original articles (including by Samuel Johnson who regularly contributed, inc parliamentary reports ), But extracts, some in full from other periodicals, books and government sources, after a short time he was getting detailed letters to print from readers near & far including information not known about to the public, so the public loved it and was arguably the most influential & imitated periodical of its time. Cave edited the Magazine under the pen name 'Sylvanus Urban', He was also the first to use the term 'magazine' (meaning ' a storehouse') for a periodical. Rare early Volume of this monthly for the year of this magazine, covering January to December 1736 Size: 13 x 21cm Approx.

First Edition
Leather. Condition: Good+. First Edition; Mixed. 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 546 pages; 1731 A. Dodd & F. Jeffries; et al. , printers & Edward Cave, London. The first 12 monthly issues of Cave's pioneering Gentleman's Magazine bound together in one volume. The monthly Magazines are of varying "editions' from 1st through 4th; their popularity and the demand for earlier issues kept Cave busy reprinting older month issues even as he was editing and printing the next regular issue. Soundly bound in contemporary paneled calf with leather title label at spine. Prior ownership of Charles Pyott and his wife, daughter of Sir Richard Sandys. The Pyott and Sandys armorial bookplates overlay each other on the front pastedown; their marriage is announced on page 36 of the 1st issue of the Magazine. Contents are complete and clean from page [1] - 132. Thereafter occur a few numbers of pages and title pages (i.e. covers) lacking. As the layout of the title pages and the order of the sections was not entirely consistent between issues, some of these apparent deficiencies may be advertisements not bound in, the lack of the cover/title page, which is counted in pagination, or the books section pages at rear of most issues not being bound in. Lacking pp 133-142; title page for April is present but without the woodcut head piece of St John's Gate; still it but appears to be the 1st issue. Lacking pp 185-188 , 187-88 being the title page for May. Lacking title page for June (i.e. pp 233/34), pp 275/276 (i.e. title page for July), pp 315-318, apparently the title page for August with an unexplained extra page. Lacking a leaf paged 409-10 but perhaps a leaf of ads, as cover for October is present; similarly lacking pages numbered 456-458. Covers/Title pages for October, November and December are present. The editions of the magazines by number are as follows: No. 1, 2nd edition; No.2, 4th edition. No. 3, 1st edition; No. 4, 1st edition; issues No. 5 - 9, indeterminate, lacking title pages; No. 10 -12, all are 3rd edition. [4] pages between June and July issues are a contents table for the 1st 6 issues.[8] pages at rear are an Index to the whole volume. Aside from deficiencies specified the condition is quite very good but is sold as is nonetheless.
