[Tokyo 1990?] Nihon Ukiyo-e Hosou Kai. Blue pictorial wraps, [56]p., color, b.w. photos, very clean bit of spine rubbing else contents pristine, Japanese & English text, ca. 18 x 26 cm. * * FIRST & ONLY OBSCURE EDITION * * . *** **** *** . .A VALUABLE, COMPLETE REFERENCE ON HIS "TOKYO MEISHO" SERIES . . . AN EXCELLENT AND SELDOM FOUND COMPLETE REFERENCE TO . . . THE WHOLE SET OF 93 PRINTS . . . WITH 8 COLOR, 84 BLACK & WHITE PHOTOGRAPHS . * This set contains no. 1 to 17 covers Daihei-ban prints made circa 1877-1879. No. 18-93 covers Fukuda-ban prints made circa 1880-1882. This work illustrates all prints in the series of "TOKYO MEISHO." . In the spirit of Meiji progress, Kiyochika put English captions on a good number of prints in this series, appealing to westerner's interest in Japanese color woodblock printing. . Of course this also contributed to his success and sales to westerners visiting Japan and collecting sourness. . With essay: UKIYO-E NO X X TO KO X by Susuki x, and . *** KOBAYASHI KIYOCHIKA [1847-1915]: . As a child he was impressed with the "Meiji Civilization and Enlightenment," which also contained all things and thoughts from foreign countries, creating an indelible impression on the young boy. He was greatly influenced by Shimooka Renjo who was Japan's first photographer and by Charles Wirgman, the publisher of "The Japan Punch," an artist of the European style. . Kiyochika became an artist, painter and drawer of Ukiyo-e prints, being greatly influenced by Hiroshige and his life master Kawanabe Gyosai. His favorite subject was Japanese landscape, especially dawn, sunset, twilight, mist, rain, snow and water surfaces. A kind of "fusion between man and nature." . He is best known for his colour woodblock prints and newspaper illustrations. His work documents the rapid modernization and Westernization Japan underwent during the Meiji period [1868-1912] and employs a sense of light and shade called "Kosen-ga" [or "Ja"] inspired by Western art techniques. . His work first found an audience in the 1870s with prints of red-brick buildings and trains that had proliferated after the Meiji Restoration. His prints of the First Sino-Japanese War of 1894-95 were also popular. . Woodblock printing fell out of favor during this period, and many collectors consider Kobayashi's work the last significant example of Ukiyo-e. Extracted from Wikipedia article see below. . *** Color photos are posted to our website. . *** RARITY: There are very few monographs on Kobayashi Kiyochika, and even fewer covering his complete TOKYO MEISHO series, illustrating all 93 prints. Therefore this is perhaps the one and only complete single resource on this series. . Highly useful to collectors ! . *** CONDITION: This item is bound in the Kogeisha publisher's green pictorial covers. There is a bit of usual but minor rubbing to the spine edges, contents is pristine, no issues. The book is firmly bound. . The book was printed by the prestigious and elite Kogeisha publishing house, known for excellent and elegant publications, at the top end of the Japanese publishing world, including Imperial publications. . *** REFERENCE: . en-wikipedia-org/wiki/Kobayashi_Kiyochika * Lane, Richard.: Masters of the Japanese Print: Their World and Their Work. * Meech-Pekarik, Julia.: The World of the Meiji Print: Impressions of a New Civilization. * Lo, Teresa Wing-Yan.: The conundrum of Japan's modernization: an examination of enlightenment prints of the 1870s . Paperback. Condition: Very good. Green wrappers, 7 x 10 inches, slight edge-wear, xiv., 254 clean pp., the Letters are in English, notes in Japanese. One hundred and ten letters sent by Winn over the course of thirty years to the Presbyterian Foreign Mission Board in New York. "The contents of the letters are mainly missionary reports from Japan during the Meiji Era. Not all parts of the letters may be equally interesting to the readers. But scattered throughout the letters will be precious records for those who are concerned with Protestant history in Japan. Some are, I believe, inspired by his ardent faith. From the letters we can understand how foreign missionaries lived in Japan. It is also interesting for others to read in parts of some letters how Japanese people in those days were viewed by foreigners.[Winn] was.second to none in his contribution to Christianity in Japan." - Preface.
