Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Wraps (PB) in very good condition with light edgewear to cover. Deborah Butterfield has made sculptures of horses since the early 1970s of various materials such as mud, sticks, barbed wire, fencing, corrugated metal, and other found materials, including a wrecked airstream trailer and the remains of a pea cannery. They confront the viewer with the -- complexity of their formal sculptural presence, specific personality, and inner core of meaning, which, according to the artist, "isn't about horses at all". Butterfield, who was born and grew up in San Diego, developed the ideas leading to her life-size horse sculptures before moving to Montana, where she currently lives and works. Unusually fine, concise exhibition catalog, handsomely produced, with mostly color plates. 70+ pages.

Many black & white illus. 522 pp. Thick 8vo, pictorial softcover, title on spine. San Francisco: Contemporary Arts Press, 1984. First and only edition, an essential book on Mail Art, with contributions by Ken Friedman, Dick Higgins, Ulises Carrión, Judith A. Hoffberg, Jean-Marc Poinsot, Milan Knizak, Klaus Groh, Anna Banana, Robert Rehfeldt, Edgardo-Antonio Vigo, C. E. Loeffler, Peter Frank, etc. It was published by La Mamelle's Contemporary Arts Press. "The sub-title of the book correctly states its place in the pantheon of mail art publications: the 'Source Book for the Network of International Postal Art Activity.' For no other work on mail art can match it for number of writings or illustrated examples of the genre. It was compiled with an eye towards giving mail art respectability and could easily be used as a college text on the subject. The book is divided into four parts: 'A Definition of Correspondence Art,' 'The Origins of Mail Art,' 'The Spread of Mail Art,' and 'Exhibitions and Publications.' Three appendixes are also included: a 'Selected List of Mail Art Exhibitions,' a 'Survey of Correspondence Artists,' and 'Mail Art a.k.a.s.'"-John Held, Jr., ed., Mail Art: An Annotated Bibliography (1991) 8.
