"The life of Rainer Maria Rilke---the poet whose Duino Elegies and Sonnets to Orpheus are among the most celebrated lyric works of our century, and whose novel, The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge, is a much beloved masterpiece---is here brilliantly told. We see his early life in Prague (raised as a girl until the age of seven), his strikingly inauspicious literary debut, the years of wandering through which he became, in effect, a citizen of the world---connected to Germany 'only by language,' his intellectual home in Paris; his trajectory through a glittering constellation of writers and artists: Tolstoy, Thomas Mann, Diaghilev, Paul Klee, Hermann Hesse, Paul Valery, Balthus; the two strong attachments that most deeply influenced him---his affair with the disarmingly impulsive Lou Andreas-Salome and his work with the French sculptor Auguste Rodin, and his extraordinary evolution as a poet---fitfully bringing forth the work that has secured him a lasting place in world letters." [publisher's copy] "The first comprehensive biography of Rilke in decades. Brilliantly written, it will appeal to readers of every age."---Die Zeit "A genial biography. The author is deeply familiar with the historical and cultural background. The fine detail of the biographical reconstruction, the energetic way in which past scenes are evoked, hosts of ladies patiently exhumed, subtle psychological continuities pursued, is remarkable and outstanding."---London Review of Books. Pristine copy w/sharp corners & crisp edges, a square & tight binding w/no creases in spine & no age toning on pages. Attractive & presentable & quite collectible.

"Praised by historians and art lovers alike, Steffi Roettgen's first volume on the frescoes of the early Italian Renaissance is the most comprehensive survey of the surviving fresco cycles painted from 1400 to 1470. In this second volume, featuring paintings from 1470 to 1510, scores of new photographs document the brilliance of works by Botticelli, Ghirlandaio, Filippino Lippi, Mantegna, Perugino, and Signorelli in palaces and chapels stretching from the Alps to Rome. Descriptive and interpretive essays on each of the seventeen cycles touch on all aspects of fresco painting: the artists and their patrons, cultural and historical conditions, local traditions, and technique. Each essay concludes with a diagram of the site, followed by a stunning series of full-page and double-page color plates of the wall paintings, many of them newly restored. This second volume of Professor Roettgen's survey builds on the strengths of Italian Frescoes: The Early Renaissance, and easily stands alone as a record of the spectacular art of a flourishing culture." : Color Photographs.
