Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Readers have been laughing in pleasure while reading "Roderick Random" ever since Tobias Smollett first wrote the book in 1748. it was Smollett's first important work, modeled after Le Sages great work, "Gil Blas". Like "Gil Blas", it is a picaresque novel, told in a series of escapades; the story is full of outrageous characters such as the effeminate Captain Whiffle, curious Dr. Wagtail, and the bard and philosopher of London alleyways, Melopoyn, dressed in rags . and of course there is Roderick Random, whose genial voice recounts adventure after adventure, tales told with gentle irony, and outrageous satire, and often with tongue in cheek . all in search of himself. It is obvious Smollett loved his creations. Some of the characters are just about perfect creations. Smollett served as surgeon's mate on one of the ships that sailed on the Carthagena Expedition against the Spanish in Columbia, which military escapade was a total disaster for the British navy. Smollett's experiences as a medical officer inform his writing to a great extent. ************************ SERIES: Everyman's Library (No. 790). TITLE : Roderick Random.
