La fécondité des terres en Cyrénaïque, fertrlés en fruits comme en céréales, propices à l'élevage des chevaux (les attelages d'Archésilas, victorieux à Delphes, furent chantés par Pindare) ; la culture du silphion, plante médicinale. négociée à prix d'or ; mais aussi le commerce en Méditerranée et le contrôle des routes caravanières par Cyrène et Leptis en rendent suffisamment compte.Cette munificence autorise, dès l'époque grecque classique, l'essor d'un urbanisme impressionnant qui ne cessera de s'amplifier lors des vastes pro-grammes d'expansion et de restauration menés à bien sous Ptolémée, Auguste, Hadrien ou Septime. La floraison des mosaïques, romaines à la villa Silin, chrétiennes et imprégnées de thèmes païens dans l'église de Gasr et Libia, exprime pareille richesse.
