Written in the first person, it is the story of Aaron Greidinger who lives in the Hasidic quarter of Warsaw during the 1930s. Shosha is his childhood friend and first love; she is inflicted with the after effects of a bout with sleeping sickness, and therefore not an intellectual match to the precocious Aaron, but to whom he will remain eternally devoted.
