Book First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. 191 pages with photographs, diagrams and index. Royal octavo (9" x 6") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. First edition. The Grünfeld Defence (ECO codes D70 D99) is a chess opening characterized by the moves: 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 d5. Black offers White the possibility of 4.cxd5, which may be followed by 4.Nxd5 and 5.e4, giving White an imposing central pawn duo. If White does not take the d5-pawn, Black may eventually play .dxc4, when a White response of e4 again leads to the same pawn structure. In classical opening theory this imposing pawn centre was held to give White a large advantage, but the hypermodern school, which was coming to the fore in the 1920s, held that a large pawn centre could be a liability rather than an asset. The Grünfeld is therefore a key hypermodern opening, showing in stark terms how a large pawn centre can either be a powerful battering ram or a target for attack. Condition: Edge wear with some damp staining, corners bumped, rubbed and creased, soiled else good.

Book First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 125 pages with diagrams. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 1/4") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. First edition. The Schliemann Defense is one of the most difficult and dangerous defenses in chess that Black has available. It starts with 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 f5 !!!! This is not considered a Gambit because it would be useless for White to take the pawn with 4. exf5. Passive Defense is likely to give White a bad game. So, White must counter with 4. Nc3. Condition: Near fine.

Book First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. x+293 pages with diagrams, plates and appendixes. Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. Foreword by Garry Kasparov. First edition. In 1995, shortly before he was to play IBM's Deep Blue, World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov defeated challenger Viswanathan Anand in eighteen demanding and gripping games. Here for the first time are move-by-move analyses by International Grandmaster Leonid Shamkovich and by Master--and Kasparov second--Michael Khodarkovsky which provide insight into the mind of the world champion as he prepared for the match against Deep Blue. Garry Kasparov handily won his first match with Deep Blue, but it is clear from Khodarkovsky's description that even in 1996 the massively parallel computer could be a difficult opponent. Then, before the spring 1997 rematch, the IBM team let on that it had improved Deep Blue considerably and that it was spoiling for a fight . . . The analysis of these games in A New Era shows just how much IBM has improved the breed. Must-reading for anyone who is passionate about the world's most enduring game of strategy and wits, A New Era takes the reader inside the world of professional chess, offering insiders' insights (including those of Kasparov himself) into the politics and psychology of competition at the top levels of play, whether against human or machine. Condition: Edge wear, corners bumped and rubbed else very good.

Book
Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. 100 pages with diagrams and index. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 1/4") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. First edition. The Classical Variation of the Schliemann Defense is one of the most exciting and complicated openings in all of chess. Periodically 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 f5 4.Nc3 fxe4 5.Nxe5 d5!? 6.Nxe5 fxe4 7.Nxc6 Qg5 is refuted, but it keeps on coming back to life and is even seen at the highest levels of the tournament play. The middlegames are characterized by ferocious attacks on both kings. In the event that a decisive result is not achieved early in the game, fascinating endgames with rooks and minor pieces arise, often with Black enjoying a powerful passed pawn on the e-file. In this book, Grandmaster Leonid Shamkovich and National Master Eric Schiller continue their examination of this variation, which they have been writing about for over a dozen years. They present much new analysis and critically review the many publications which have appeared in recent years. No fan of the Schliemann should be without this book, and players of the Spanish Game (Ruy Lopez) will want it in their arsenal if they dare to enter the main lines. Condition: Near fine.
