Single 17 cm. Einfaches blaues, unbedrucktes OLochover. Cover an den Rändern leicht gebräunt, sonst sehr gut. Platte so gut wie tadellos. Erstpressung der zweiten Einspielung des Liebesliedes "Malaika"? Um dessen Urheberschaft stritten sich mehrere Musiker, letztlich wurde sie aber Fadhili offiziell zugesprochen, der es erstmals 1960 mit der "Jambo Boys Band" aufnahm. Die vorliegende Neuaufnahme entstand 1963 als Charles Worrod, der Chef von Equator, das Potential des Liedes erkannte und die schlechte erste Aufnahme durch vorliegende ersetzte. Ich konnte von dieser sieben Pressungen mit unterschiedlichen Cover- und Labelvarianten nachweisen, hier blau-rote Label mit Afrikalandkarte und festem, rundem Dreipunkt-Mittelsteg. Der in Swahili gesungene Titel wurde einer der erfolgreichsten Hits in ganz Ostafrika und von zahlreichen afrikanischen Bands gecovert, eine frühe Version von Miriam Makeba machte ihn dann auch international bekannt. So wurde er zum weltweit wohl bekanntesten Titel ostafrikanischer Musik, den so unterschiedliche Musiker wie Harry Belafonte, Pete Seeger, Helmut Lotti u.a. aufnahmen, wobei in Deutschland wohl am bekanntesten die Disco-Version von Bonney M. sein dürfte. Fadhili (1938-2001), Gitarrist, Singer-Songwriter, Arrangeur und Komponist, war in Kenia eine Popmusic-Legende und einer der ersten, der in Ostafrika eine elektrische Gitarre spielte. In den etwa 200 Stücken, die er schrieb, mischte er traditionelle Musik seiner Heimat mit Jazz- und Country & Western-Elementen, südafrikanischer Kwela-Musik und lateinamerikanischen Rumbarhythmen. Seit 1960 war er Musiker in der Equator Sound Band, der Hausband des Labels. Er arbeite für Equator aber auch als Talentsucher, Produzent und Sessionmusiker, eine Tätigkeit, die er später, nach Auflösung des Labels für Phonogram in Nairobi fortsetzte. Er kam und spielte dabei mit vielen Größen der afrikanischen Musik zusammen und war sogar an Aufnahmen mit Louis Armstrong und Mitgliedern der Beatles beteiligt. Fadhili lebte für einige Jahre auch in den USA. (Daten u.a. aus den websites "East African Music" und "KenTanza Vinyl: an East African dicography"). Beiliegend lustige Werbekarte eines Souvenierhändlers in Malindi/Kenya in drolligem, fehlerhaftem Deutsch: "Abu A. Bawazir Billge Jak,ob.
