La littérature médiévale russe a non seulement préservé pour toutes les générations ultérieures de précieux témoignages sur l'histoire russe à ses débuts, sur la culture, les légendes et les moeurs russes pendant l'époque kiévienne et sous le joug tatar, mais également donné de grands textes p-oétiques, tel le fameux Dit de l'ost d'Igor, dont la poétique imprègne une part importante de la poésie russe postérieure à sa découverte à la fin du XVIII siècle - même si son authenticité et les discussions soulevées à cet égard forment en soi un feuilleton. La première partie de cet ouvrage, qui va du XVe au XVIe siècle, montre le développement des genres médiévaux et leur lien avec le christianisme orthodoxe et la pensée religieuse de l'époque.
