Este intelectual belga, buen conocedor de España ya en 1917 y, después, durante la guerra civil, nos proporciona una visión coetánea a la deriva de la revolución rusa hacia lo que Serge define como "degeneración soviética". El autor ha divido el libro en tres partes diferenciadas. En la primera, denuncia la barbarie estalinista. En la segunda, cómo debe evitarse que esa barbarie penetre en la España republicana. Por último, en la tercera parte, Serge plantea un nuevo socialismo.

El presente volumen recoge buena parte de los artículos que Víctor Serge escribió entre abril de 1936, cuando consiguió marchar de Rusia, hasta su fallecimiento en 1947. Desde el momento en que llegó a Bruselas dedicó buena parte de su producción literaria a denunciar el proceso involucionista que estaba sufriendo la Unión Soviética bajo el mandato de Stalin, en un momento en que se produjeron las grandes purgas que pusieron fin a la vieja guardia bolchevique. La coincidencia de este proceso con el estallido de la Guerra Civil española le llevó a implicarse también en ella, militando en el Partido Obrero de Unificación Marxista (POUM) y defendiendo su política en todo momento. Los inicios de la represión que sufrió el POUM por parte del Partido Comunista con el asesinato de Andreu Nin, entre otros dirigentes llevaron a Serge a comparar el proceso que estaba sufriendo la República española con los acontecimientos que sufría la URSS bajo Stalin.
