Each volume also contains 'notes and a glossary of Scottish words and foreign phrases' to the rear of the work.'Redgauntlet: A Tale of the Eighteenth Century', originally published in 1824, is a historical novel set in southwest Scotland. It follows a fictional third Jacobite Rebellion, and also features one of Scott's most famous short stories, 'Wandering Willie's Tale'.'Saint Ronan's Well', originally published in 1823, is set in a fashionable spa in the Scottish Borders. The plot concerns a rivalry between the Earl of Etherington and his half-brother Francis Tyreel, who both want to marry the same woman.Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) was a Scottish novelist, poet, and playwright, who is responsible for popular works such as 'Ivanhoe', 'Waverley', and 'The Bride of Lammermoor. Alongside writing, Scott was also an advocate, judge, and legal administrator. He helped to establish the historical novel genre within the realm of European Romanticism.With 'biographical and critical notes' from editor Peter Hately Waddell (1817-1891), a Scottish cleric and writer. He is known for founding a congregation called the 'Church of the Future', which was an independent chapel in Girvan.Collated, complete. Bound in half-calf on cloth boards. Externally, smart. Wear to the extremities and the spine, particularly to the head and tail. Front joint is starting from the top edge, where it is beginning to come away from the binding. Internally, firmly bound.
