Basé sur une histoire vraie, dans une ronde de témoignages qui défie la chronologie classique pour mieux épingler son sujet, le roman noir et sophistiqué d'un tueur en série dans l'Allemagne des années 1930. Par l'auteur de La Ferme du crime. L'action se déroule à Munich entre 1931 et 1939. Les événements ne nous sont pas présentés dans un ordre chronologique. Le roman s'ouvre ainsi sur la condamnation à mort et l'exécution de Josef Kalteis, accusé en 1939 du meurtre de plusieurs jeunes femmes à Munich et dans les environs. On suit le destin de plusieurs infortunées qui vont croiser sa route, ainsi que celui de Kathie, jeune et belle provinciale qui veut tenter sa chance à la ville. Elle envisage tout d'abord de trouver une place de bonne, mais la fréquentation de jeunes citadines plus libres lui fait immédiatement changer d'avis.Elle voudrait vivre comme Mitzi, une jeune femme entretenue par un fiancé lointain et "protégée" par un ami à Munich. On plonge avec Kathie dans une atmosphère qui n'est pas sans rappeler Schnitzler, avec ses cafés populaires, ses fêtes foraines et ses amourettes. Mais ici, plus encore que chez l'auteur viennois, la légèreté a toujours un arrière-goût de danger et de violence. Comme dans La Ferme du crime, on passe d'un personnage à l'autre, de Kathie et son espoir de commencer une nouvelle vie à Munich, aux proches des jeunes femmes disparues ou retrouvées mortes qui nous livrent leurs témoignages ; la parole est également donnée à Walburga, l'épouse de l'accusé. L'interrogatoire de Josef Kalteis traverse habilement le roman : si l'on peut encore le croire, au début, lorsqu'il affirme ne s'en être pris qu'à une seule jeune fille (qu'il n'a pas tuée), plus le récit avance, plus on découvre l'ampleur de sa folie meurtrière. On attend alors avec effroi le moment où la jeune Kathie va croiser le chemin de Kalteis. Andrea Maria Schenkel se base sur une histoire vraie, celle de Johann Eichhorn, par ailleurs membre du NSDAP, qui a fait de nombreuses victimes à Munich dans les années 1930. L'auteur de La Ferme du crime signe là un excellent second roman, aussi noir que fascinant. Elle dépeint formidablement le Munich des années 1930, celui des ouvriers, des filles et des désoeuvrés, décor parfait pour le récit de ces meurtres qu'on lit d'une traite, pris dans l'atmosphère sombre et délétère du roman. - Nombre de page(s) : 1 vol.
