Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. Sam Kittner (Author photograph) (illustrator). [4], 312, [2] pages. Illustrated endpapers. Illustrations. Notes. Bibliography. Index. Christopher Wallace (born October 12, 1947) is an American journalist, and former television news anchor of the Fox News program Fox News Sunday. Wallace became an assistant to Walter Cronkite during the 1964 Republican National Convention. After graduating from Harvard University, he worked as a national reporter for The Boston Globe where he was described by his boss as an "aggressive and ambitious reporter". After seeing the impact television had on news at the 1972 Republican National Convention, he focused on working on broadcast news, first at NBC (1975-1988) where he served as a White House correspondent. Wallace also worked the anchor for NBC Nightly News and host of Meet the Press. He then worked for ABC, where he served as an anchor for Primetime Thursday and Nightline (1989-2003). Wallace is the only person to have served as host and moderator of more than one of the major U.S. political Sunday morning talk shows. From 2003 to 2021, Wallace hosted Fox News Sunday, on which his interviews with politicians such as Barack Obama and Donald Trump received acclaim. Wallace has won three Emmy Awards, a Peabody Award, a George Polk Award, the duPont-Columbia University Silver Baton Award, and a Paul White lifetime achievement award. Mitchell S. Weiss (born 1957) is an American investigative journalist, and an editor at the Charlotte Observer. He won the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting, with Joe Mahr and Michael D. Sallah. Derived from a Kirkus review: What it took for Harry Truman, after fewer than three months in the White House, to decide to drop the atomic bombâ "and how the plan was executed. The end of World War II in the Pacific was as definitive as the mushroom cloud and firestorm produced by the weapon that brought it about. Wallace describes a moment in history when both intense deliberation and decisive leadership were essential. On April 12, 1945, Truman, then the vice president, was summoned to the White House, where he expected to meet President Franklin Roosevelt. Instead, he was received by the president's wife, Eleanor, who told Truman that Roosevelt had died, only a few months into his fourth term. Truman was shaken by the news, but it was a cryptic message from Secretary of War Henry Stimson that would define the rest of that yearâ "and the war. Stimson informed the new president about Roosevelt's top-secret project to build a nuclear weapon, and he did not prevaricate in describing the weapon's potential to the new president: "Modern civilization might be completely destroyed." Wallace describes how Truman thought that there was every reason to believe that the alternative to using the new weaponâ "a ground invasionâ "would result in hundreds of thousands of deaths, on both the American/Allied and the Japanese side. The author peppers in the story of Hideko Tamura, a young Japanese girl who was sent away from her home in Hiroshima only to beg her mother to returnâ "just in time to survive the detonation of the first atomic bomb. Wallace presents a history of the three months between Truman's taking office and the dropping of the bombs. This is a brisk work of history that weaves together the various factions responsible for the deployment of the first atomic bombs. First Edition [Stated], First Printing [Stated].
