Gil Blas is a picaresque novel by Alain-René Lesage published between 1715 and 1735. It is considered to be the last masterpiece of the picaresque genre. Written by Alain-René Le Sage (6 May 1668 17 November 1747), a French novelist and playwright. He is best known for his comic novel The Devil upon Two Sticks, his comedy Turcaret and, of course, this novel. Translated from the original French by Tobias Smollett. "With twelve original etchings by R. de los Rios." Hand numbered 83 of only 100 sets, "on laid paper, medium 8vo, with proof etchings on Japanese paper". Uniformly bound in the publisher's original cloth bindings. Externally, generally smart with sunning to spines and light wear to extremities. Dampstaining and light mold to the rear board and final few pages of volume I. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with only occasional instances of spotting. Many pages remain uncut.
