hardcover. Condition: fair. Hardcover, no dust jacket, 141 pages. Poor cover with broken spine, good contents, inscription dated 1964. Very little about Epictetus is known with certainty except that he was the slave of one Epaphroditus, a profligate freedman of Rome and an officer of Nero's imperial guard. But is generally believed that Epictetus was lame and a weakling from birth, and perhaps because of this physical weakness his master sent him to study philosophy.

Inspired by Wagner's haunting opera, The Tale of Lohengrin follows the titular knight, son of Percival, on his mission to rescue a damsel in distress. Here brought to life with Pogany's stirring visuals, which highlight the romance and darkness inherent to chivalric epics. William Andrew ("Willy") Pogany (born Vilmos Andreas Feichtmann) (1882-1955) was a Hungarian illustrator. Pogany's Art Nouveau style is distinct; he incorporated fantastical, mythic, and natural themes into his highly detailed pen and ink drawings and his dream-like watercolors. He was a prolific artist, crafting illustrations for The Rubáiyat of Omar Khayyám, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Tannhäuser and Parsifal, and Lohengrin, among many others. George Bayntun (1873-1940) was the founder of Bayntun Bindery. Trained by apprenticeship with the Taylor family, Bayntun opened his own book bindery in 1894 dedicated to using traditional hand-crafted techniques and high-quality materials. The Bath-based firm acquired the Rivière Bindery in 1939, transforming into the "Bayntun-Riviere bindery," which is still in existence and family owned. Near Fine.
