Hardcover with dust jacket. Condition: Sehr gut. 357 p. Ein sehr gutes und sauberes Exemplar/ A very good and clean copy. - Reconstructing Ashkenaz shows that, contrary to traditional accounts, the Jews of Western Europe in the High Middle Ages were not a society of saints and martyrs. David Malkiel offers provocative revisions of commonly held interpretations of Jewish martyrdom in the First Crusade massacres, the level of obedience to rabbinic authority, and relations with apostates and with Christians. In the process, he also reexamines and radically revises the view that Ashkenazic Jewry was more pious than its Sephardic counterpart. CONTENT: i Image Adumbrations Martyrdom Survival Apostates Deviance Christians Sepharad. Ashkenaz in the Hebrew Bible is one of the descendants of Noah. Ashkenaz is the first son of Gomer, and a Japhetic patriarch in the Table of Nations. In rabbinic literature, the descendants of Ashkenaz were first associated with the Scythian cultures, then later with the Slavic territories, and, from the 11th century onwards, with Germany and northern Europe, in a manner similar to Tzarfat or Sefarad. His name is related to the Assyrian A kuza (A kuzai, I kuzai), the Scythians who expelled the Gimirri (Gimirrai) from the Armenian highland of the Upper Euphrates area (Wikipedia).
