Published by The Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia and the American Ornithologists' Union, 1995
Paperback. Condition: New. Species account number 171 in the Birds of North America Life Histories for the 21st Century series. In 1992 the American Ornithologists' Union in partnership with the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia undertook the publication of species accounts for each of the more than 700 species which breed in the United States and Canada. These illustrated reviews provide comprehensive summaries of the current knowledge of the species, with range maps and an extensive list of references. The series is complete, in 716 parts. The item number is the unique number for each species account; accounts are numbered in order of publication. Accounts are 8 ½ x 11 inch booklets which include information about distribution, systematics, migration, habitat, sounds, behavior, breeding, appearance, and conservation. This issue is a reprint of the original printing. No stock of the original printingremains. These photographic copies are barely distinguishable from the originals; interior pages are in black & white and lack the blue in graphs and line drawings.

Hardcover. Condition: VG. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Dust jacket condition: Very Good. Very nice clean copy. Text free of highlighting and writing. Tightly bound. WHAT is most characteristic Ireland's scenic heritage?--ThC Quays and the Customs House in Dublin, Glendalough and Ardmore Round Tower, the Mountains of Mourne and the Antrim Coast, the Meath Hunt and Killarney races, the river Lee at Cork and the Clock-gate at Youghal, the strands and mountains of Donegal, and the barren coastline of Connemara? If these are the kind of scenes which you associate particularly with Ireland then in the 40 colour photographs in this book you will find an epitome of everything that is most truly Irish. As well as the more obvious subjects there are pictures of many other places which, if less , familiar, are Just as representative: Ardglass in Co. Down, for instance, Inistioge in Co. Kilkenny, Knock-narea Mountain in Co. Sligo, Clogh-erhead in Co. Louth, Cushendun in Co. Antrim, Derryclare Lough in Connemara, Greystones in Co. Wicklow--these are only a few of the less well-known places which are here illustrated. If the book's pictures are original, its text, by W. R. Rodgers, is certainly no less so. Mr. Rodgers is a poet, one of the most eminent in Ireland today, so he looks at things through curious eyes and writes of what he sees in fresh words. His long introduction is not so much an evocation of the Ireland of the past as a re-creation of the Irish scene of today. He has also contributed long notes about the subject of each illustration, and here the reader will find the more prosaic and factual information which can give added meaning to a view.
