Book First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Poor. 1st Edition. London: Dean and Munday, Threadneedle Street, and A.K. Newman & Co., Leadenhall Street [c. 1825]. First edition. Undated, but British Library catalogue gives c. 1825. 32p. including card covers. 16 hand-coloured illustrations including title-page vignette. Blank pages have been stuck back to back. Some pages detached. Paper tanned, numerous marks, covers very dirty, spine repaired with blue tape. Despite its very poor condition, this item is of great interest owing to the rarity of the first edition. In the 1880s John Ruskin was attracted to the tale and the illustrations; Kate Greenaway added some new illustrations, and Ruskin some new verses, to a new edition published in 1885.
