Small octavo, original pictorial pink wrappers printed in black, side stapled. First edition. Sensation novella depicting the harsh pioneer life of miners in New Zealand in the 1870s. While the hero is away prospecting his small children die; he drowns, and his grief-stricken wife ends up in the madhouse. Staple stains to wrappers, a bit of fading to same, tiny chip from lower fore-edge corner of rear cover, a very good copy with fine interior. (#118004).
