Paperback. Condition: NEUF. En 1883, deux ans à peine après le massacre de la mission Flatters au puits de Tadjenout, un colon algérien s'offrait au gouvernement pour courir l'aventure à son tour. Son but était de relier l'Algérie au Soudan et au Niger, en relevant au travers du Sahara les routes qui les unissaient. L'entreprise était difficile et périlleuse. Il s'agissait de milliers de kilomètres à parcourir en pays déserts, presque tous inconnus, parmi des populations belliqueuses, hostiles et redoutées. L'homme qui se présentait pour la tenter était Fernand Foureau. Etabli depuis une quinzaine d'années déjà au sud de l'Algérie, il connaissait le pays, ses habitants et était connu d'eux ; il savait leur langue, leurs moeurs et leur esprit. Malgré ces garanties, l'entreprise parut alors trop périlleuse et il lui fallut attendre 1897 pour réaliser son projet. Il s'allia au commandant Lamy qui, lui aussi, dans divers voyages au Congo, au Transvaal et au Cap, avait rêvé de relier la France africaine du Nord à la France africaine du Centre. L'histoire de la mission saharienne qu'on va lire, notée au jour le jour par son chef, se divise en deux périodes. La première - d'Ouargla à Zinder, octobre 1898 à novembre 1899 -, c'est la traversée du Sahara et l'exploration de l'Aïr.
