Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. This is the Temple Edition of William Shakespeares comedy, "A Midsummer Night's Dream". The book was edited, with a Preface, Glossary and Notes by Israel Gollancz, and published by J. M. Dent & Co/in London . This is the 9th Temple Edition, issued in November 1902. It is a Dream of which only Shakespeare could have penned. Mere mortals, even though they be titled gentry, have muddled up love and a wedding. They become enmeshed in the playful mechinations of Oberon and Titania, king and queen of the fairies. Using Puck, a 'mischievous sprite, they plan to confuse the humans and so the Dream is set in motion. Fun and confusion follow, including false loves engendered by fairy potions, and a man whose long-eared ass's head mask takes on a little too much reality. But it end's well as Oberon and Titania take pity on the poor mortals. It is all a most delicious dramatic fantasy! *********************************** It's a lovely, petite book, measuring approximately 4" x 5 3/8", bound in maroon cloth with top edge gilt. The front cover has Shakespeare's family heraldic crest stamped in blind; the spine has the title in gilt. The fore- and bottom text-block edges are rough trimmed. Inside, the end-papers, front and back, have Shakespeare's heraldic crest printed in black and yellow. The half-title announces the series ("The Temple Shakespeare"). The frontispiece is a reproduction in miniature of the gravure of the Room in Stratford on Avon wherein Shakespeare was born. This frontispiece is accompanied by a guard tissue, which has printed on it a quote from John Milton. *************************************** The decorated title page, which is rubricated (printed in red and black), features a central vignette of a young, winged fairy cavorting with a thin banner. On the verso of the title page is a quote from Chaucer's "Wife of Bath'sTale" : 'The Elf Queen with her jollie companie Danced ful ofte in many a greenë mede ' The rest of the book is lightly rubricated throughout with the act and scene numbers rendered in red. The book is bound with a silk place-marker. *************************************** SERIES : Temple Shakespeare / TITLE : Shakespeare's Comedy of A Midsummers Night's Dream / AUTHOR : William Shakespeare (1564 - 1616) / EDITOR, PREFACE, GLOSSARY, NOTES : Israel Gollancz (1864 - 1930) / TEXTUAL QUOTES : Chaucer & John Milton / IMPRINT : J. Top edge gilt, fore-and bottom edges rough-trimmed. Bound with silk place-marker. ************************************* CONDITION VERY GOOD This is a previously owned book that remains clean and attractive, with the following particulars noted :: EXTERIOR -- Gilt lettering on spine is bright; top edge gilt is slightly rubbed but basically fairly bright; the rear cover has a wide, but transparent, water discoloration which has little overt effect; there are a few shallow balloonings, else the cover has strong color and only slightly bumped corner tips. / BINDING -- Most of the leaves have not been separated; the whole is pretty solid with no detached or loose leaves. / INTERIOR -- There are a few small 'tea' stains , and some of the leaves are toned; frontispiece and guard tissue are toned - else the interior is clean and presentable with no marking, no writing and no signatures.

King Lear is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare. It is loosely based on the mythological Leir of Britain. King Lear, in preparation for his old age, divides his power and land between his daughters Goneril and Regan, who pay homage to gain favour, feigning love. The King's third daughter, Cordelia, is offered a third of his kingdom also, but refuses to be insincere in her praise and affection. She instead offers the respect of a daughter and is disowned by Lear who seeks flattery. Regan and Goneril subsequently break promises to host Lear and his entourage, so he opts to become homeless and destitute, goes insane, and the French King married to Cordelia invades Britain to restore order and Lear's rule. In a subplot, Edmund, the illegitimate son of Gloucester, betrays his brother and father. Tragically, Lear, Cordelia and several other main characters die. A clean very presentable copy.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 4th Edition. J.M. Dent and Company, London, UK. 1896. Hardcover. Stated 4th Edition but really is the 4th Printing from the copyright page. One of The Temple Shakespeare Series. Book is tight, square, and unmarked but for a F/O signature on the FFFP dated January 4, 1898. Book Condition: Very Good; shelfwear to head, tail, and tips; curling of tips; slight weakness in the first signature (FFFP and front pastedown). No DJ. Maroon cloth boards and spine with bright gilt lettering on the spine; Temple Shakespeare logo embossed on front board; Non Sans Droict (Not Without Rights) stamp to the front and rear pastedowns. Frontispiece drawing of Holy Trinity Church/Stratford on Avon with tissue guard. Gilt top edging. 134 pp 24mo. The play is set in Messina and revolves around two romantic pairings that emerge when a group of soldiers arrives in the town. The first, between Claudio and Hero, is nearly scuppered by the accusations of the villain, Don John. The second, between Claudio's friend Benedick and Hero's cousin Beatrice, takes centre stage as the play continues, with both characters' wit and banter providing much of the humour. Through "noting" (sounding like "nothing" and meaning gossip, rumour, overhearing),[2][3] Benedick and Beatrice are tricked into confessing their love for each other, and Claudio is tricked into believing that Hero is not a maiden (virgin). The title's play on words references the secrets and trickery that form the backbone of the play's comedy, intrigue, and action. A clean very presentable copy.
