Quetzalcoatl, il serpente piumato - dio e simbolo - ha esercitato la sua influenza per tremila anni come concetto, e come uomo per circa un millennio. Questo fatto aumenta il nostro interesse per individuare la sua traccia significativa nella storia e nella cultura mesoamericane, in quanto, conoscendo il valore del concetto e la grandezza ideologica dell'uomo, potremo forse meglio comprendere e risolvere i problemi del nostro presente. Questo libro è diviso in tre parti. La prima vuole situare Quetzalcoatl nella storia, esaminare la realtà che si viveva prima della sua apparizione nel tempo e i mutamenti culturali introdotti sotto la sua influenza. Sottoponendo a revisione tutte le conoscenze sulla materia, questa prima parte si propone particolarmente di chiarire e distinguere due aspetti: quello mitico - Quetzalcoatl-dio - e quello storico - Quetzalcoatl-uomo. La seconda parte, pur fondata su fonti storiche, è un apprezzamento poetico-filosofico, con licenze letterarie. Quetzalcoatl così presentato, in dramma e poesia, esprime il senso più profondo della vita preispanica. La via del sentimento ci permette di raggiungere una conoscenza più profonda e soprattutto di svelare sfumature sottili dell'essere umano, che la scienza stessa non riesce ad afferrare nella loro totalità. L'ultima parte è una applicazione del metodo della psicanalisi a tutte le testimonianze che permettono di addentrarci negli aspetti sociopsicologici del mondo preispanico. Questa moderna tecnica di indagine, che penetra nel passato, rende più comprensibile il nostro presente, nella misura in cui analizza il comportamento umano e i suoi sviluppi logici nel divenire.
