Couverture souple. +++++++ Réédition de la seconde moitié du XXe siècle de cet ouvrage de Frédéric de Portal (1804-1876) publié originellement en 1837 chez Treutel et Wurtz. Cette réédition moderne est basée sur l'édition de 1857 chez le même éditeur. « L'histoire des couleurs symboliques, encore ignorée, et dont je n'offre que quelques fragments, servira peut-être à déchiffrer les hiéroglyphes de l'Egypte, et à dévoiler une partie des mystères de l'Antiquité, je ne me flatte pas d'avoir atteint le but dans ces recherches ; ma seule ambition a été de fixer l'attention des savants sur le point le plus négligé et l'un des plus curieux de l'archéologie. » Les couleurs eurent la même signification chez tous les peuples de la haute Antiquité ; cette conformité indique une commune origine qui se rattache au berceau de l'humanité, et trouve sa plus haute énergie dans la religion de la Perse ; le dualisme de la lumière et des ténèbres offre, en effet, les deux types des couleurs qui devinrent les symboles des deux principes bienfaisant et malfaisant. Les Anciens n'admettaient que deux couleurs primitives, le blanc et le noir, dont toutes les autres dérivaient ; de même les divinités du paganisme étaient des émanations du bon et du mauvais principe. « La langue des couleurs, intimement unie à la religion, passe dans l'Inde, en Chine, en Egypte, en Grèce, à Rome ; elle reparaît dans le Moyen Age, et les vitraux des cathédrales gothiques trouvent leur explication dans les livres zends, les Védas et les peintures des temples égyptiens. » L'identité des symboles suppose l'identité des croyances primitives ; à mesure qu'une religion s'éloigne de son principe, se dégrade et se matérialise, elle oublie la signification des couleurs, et cette langue mystérieuse reparaît vivante avec la vérité religieuse. Selon Stéphane de Guaita, Eliphas Levy, a utilisé cet ouvrage pour composer ses travaux d'Exégèse Kabbalistique (Albert L. Caillet ) Bon état.
