Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1987 first edition Birkhauser (Boston, Massachusetts), oblong 9 1/2 x 9 inches tall blue glossy pictorial hardcover, no dust jacket (as issued), white lettering to front cover and spine, pale blue endpapers, copiously illustrated with black-and-white photographs, 160 pp. Slight soiling, rubbing and edgewear to covers, with very slight bumping to the lower tips. Otherwise, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked. Note that this is a heavy and oversized book, so additional postage will be required for international or priority orders. ~I~ [2.5P] George Polya (1887-1985) was a professor of mathematics from 1914 to 1940 at ETH Zurich and from 1940 to 1953 at Stanford University. He made fundamental contributions to combinatorics, number theory, numerical analysis and probability theory. He is also noted for his work in heuristics and mathematics education. For many years mathematicians visiting Stanford enjoyed guided tours through pages of the Polya photograph album, led by Polya himself. This is a selection of the photographs accompanied by remarks taken from tapes of Polya's conversations with his visitors.
